Student Affairs Philosophy

As an up and coming student affairs professional, it is my duty to be the light at the end of the tunnel for each student. Motivating students to set goals and work to achieve those goals, as well as reiterating that setting and achieving goals should be a lifelong standard for all. Not every student is deemed the opportunity of higher education, reminding students to take advantage of the opportunity they have, by taking education serious and putting their best foot forward is what I stand by. I have learned the importance of keeping an open-mind and understand that each student is different and diverse in their own way. Remembering this very significant fact has allowed me to learn to approach situations professionally and without judgment of others. Being a leader in higher education is not always easy, but satisfying in the end when students are positively impacted. During my journey as a professional I have learned what it takes to become a leader as well as gained knowledge of professionalism. I have created a vision of my role within the student affairs field and the values I hold for myself as a professional. The values I have created are as follows:

Students Come First

Ultimately, the reason that higher education even exists is because students. Students are the heartbeat of a college institution. Understanding that the needs of students are most important, fulfilling each student’s concerns and needs is my goals as an aspiring student affairs professional. If I have successfully assisted a student per day I am happy with that.

My Duty is to Educate

As a professional it is my duty to teach students the essentials of having a successful college career. Whether it be motivating students to get involved on their college campus, or informing students on the skills they need to study for a class. I believe that without effective professionals in a college setting students may feel limited to what they achieve and the knowledge they gain. It is my goal to be that effective professional.

To abide by Institution Values

Abiding by and following the values of the institution is my personal value. Ensuring that institutional needs are met and students are meeting these requirements are vital. Finding success within an institution for me means taking a department goal and connecting it to the overall goal of the university.
